He wanted to portray man’s struggles. It goes from his journey from Hell, Purgatory and Heaven. It shows the different stages that man must overcome if he is to gain salvation. He uses real people and gets material from religion to push his message that the journey to finding Heaven and God is hard but well worth it at the end.
He wanted to express his ideas about Catholicism, Italian politics, and basic human nature.
