Many of the Eastern European countries were liberated from the Nazis by Russia. They suffered a great deal under the Nazi occupation and they were afraid of a recurrence so for them communism was a safer option. Russia on the other hand, wanted to expand its power all over Eastern Europe so once they liberated a country, they did not leave. They used diplomacy andmilitary might to persuade these countries to embrace communism.
