In his essay "On Nuclear Disarmament," Sagan argues that disarmament must happen now, before it is too late.

He says that existing precautions to prevent a nuclear war are not adequate. He says that people make mistakes, and to prevent a nuclear catastrophe, disarmament is the only logical path. He says people must act now, before something bad happens, instead doing something of "after the carnage."

Disarmament, he says, "is necessary for human survival."
