Americans believed that these policies violated their rights. They claimed that Britain had no right to tax the colonies or put a monopoly on American trade because Britain only had virtual representation in the Americas. Britain refused to respond to Americans' claims, and many Americans saw this as a sign of corruption in British government, which created hostilities between colonists and imperial officials that sometimes lead to violence, and this violence eventually erupted into war.
