From the mid 15th century until the end of the 16th century Genoa, Italy served as one of the trading capitals of Spain and Europe. As a result, it would be no surprise that Christopher Columbus, being born in the city in 1451, would have great career opportunities in trading, specifically as a marine merchant. The relationships developed in Columbus's early career would be important in his later years of naval exploration.
