A car had a change in velocity because it's speed was 20 mph then went up to 35 mph.

This would make senses cause "a change in velocity" means that the speed or the direction (or both) would change for any object. In this case I made the speed change.

The term "acceleration" means "change in velocity", that is,
any change in the speed or direction of motion.
