Pro tempore.is a person who acts as a placeholder (‘President for a time”) in the absence of a President, such as the President pro tempore of the United States Senate. He is a recognized officer elected by the Senate, usually a by custom, a senator of the majority party and with the longest service. The president pro tempore in the Senate is more powerful than the majority and minority leaders.
