4x + 5 = 8

First, take away '5' from both sides.
[tex]4x = 8 - 5[/tex]
Second, subtract '8 - 5' to get '3'.
[tex]4x = 3[/tex]
Third, divide both sides by '4'.
[tex]x = \frac{3}{4} [/tex]

Answer as fraction: [tex]x = \frac{3}{4} [/tex]
Answer as decimal: [tex]x = 0.75[/tex]
