The "power" schools during the initial collegiate athletic contests were the Ivy League schools. The Ivy League includes 8 private tertiary education institutions located in the Northeast of the United States. These are Brown University, Harvard University, Columbia University, Princeton University, University of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth College, Yale University, and Cornell University.
