What made it difficult for union workers to create Large industrial unions?

Okay, so one the workers were way to far apart. Not only that there were way too many companies! That caused it to make it impossible to make a country wide union because the people did not even know what each other looked like! So then the companies were able to beat the unions more easily when it came to workers rights!!
