Leonardo Da Vinci's inspiration for his flying machine was modeled off of birds and other winged animals. He imagined people being able to fly through the sky like these animals. The pilot would lie face down in the contraption and pedal to bring power to the wings, which largely resembled those of a bat. However, no person would be able to generate enough power to lift the machine off the ground.
