Sam worked a total of 36 hours. Over two weeks he worked twice as many hours in the second week as the first. How many hours did he work in the first week.?

x+2x=36

3x=36

(divide by 3) x=12

Therefore he worked 12 hours in the first week and 24 in the second, totalling 36 hours altogether :)
