Emails consists of two parts: the Local part and the Domain part. For example, john@example.com. 'john' is the Local part that identifies a specific inbox, where 'example.com' is where this inbox is located. 'example.com' can be replaced with an ip address in square braces, for example, '[192.168.0.1]'.
