I do not know the except, so I am not 100% sure on this one. But I did read the story so I think I remember.

Since everyone trusted and respected Dimmesdale as a preacher, they respect every decision he makes. They knew he had something on his chest for some time, and since he finally told everyone about it, they respect him for opening up.
