Let's say that your problem is [tex] 6^{4} [/tex]
The "4" would be your index of the exponent in the and the "6" would be your base in the problem (if that makes any sense to you)

Now we have to write "[tex] 6^{4} [/tex] " which is (6)(6)(6)(6) = 1,296

To make it "simpler" you 6(6) = 36 = 6(6) = 36 ← (again) So, 36(36) = 1,296

Does this come to mind to you?
