This is an extremely important scene that plays a massive role in the development of the plot. Shakespeare shows the themes of loyalty and treachery being discussed and demonstrated. We see the increasing degradation and brutality of Macbeth's reign: Banquo was assassinated for a purpose; Lady Macduff and her son, who are entirely innocent, are brutally murdered for pure spite.
