Harriet Tubman's father, Ben Ross, helped by teaching her how to navigate difficult terrain in the Eastern Shore. He also helped her to know the direction of the wind by licking her finger and sticking it in the air, knowing which side of a tree that mold grows on, and the sound that birds make when they are disturbed.
