Well, that depends. 
My answer would be the Holiday's origin/history.
Christmas, for example, was a Christian Holiday, which celebrated Jesus being born. Eventually over time, it became a national Holiday. The tradition of giving presents, seemingly meaningless, is to signify the three kings giving presents to the baby Jesus.
