"The Yellow Wallpaper" is very similar to psychological horror fiction, moreover, it shows a woman being limited, oppressed, and subjugated and not a woman overcoming her difficulties. Some people may see this as something outside of what feminism presents.

Working-class women identified with the narrator's oppression because they went through very similar situations.

By reading "The Yellow Wallpaper" we can access the following information:

  • The author of the book is the narrator.
  • The author tells the moments when she was isolated, without a social life, and unable to do any activity, on medical advice.
  • This occurred after she had postpartum depression and her husband recommended that she see a doctor and that she obey everything the doctor said.
  • The treatment she received was very inadequate and nearly drove her completely mad, but this treatment was kept by her husband as a way of keeping her limited and oppressed.

Many working-class women at the time the book was written identified with the author's account. That's because these women were also oppressed by their husbands and doctors, who determined that they were crazy, hysterical and that they should be kept locked up and away from any kind of activity, when in fact, they didn't need to.

This book began to be seen as a feminist book, as it showed the oppression of a woman created by a man's desire for superiority. However, many criticize this denomination and argue that a feminist book should show a woman overcoming oppression and not going crazy over it.
