I believe this is true.

During presidential elections, the most popular votes (chosen by the people) doesn't count. The Electoral College decides who should be President of the United States.

For example, during this year's election, Donald Trump won the election by having 290 electoral votes.

Whichever candidate has a total of 270 or more Electoral votes will be chosen as the next President of the United States.
