Because when they combine the fertilized egg will have 46 chromosomes. The egg has 23 chromosomes and the sperm has 23 so adding them together is the 46 chromosomes the human body is supposed to have.

Because body cells are supposed to have 46 chromosomes! So the sex cells will have 23 so that when there nuclei fuse together the 23 chromosomes from the egg and the 23 chromosomes from the sperm will add together to leave you with 46! Just like a normal body cell
