Polk was very interested in buying California from Mexico. However, Mexico refused to sell it. So Polk sent troops at the Rio Grande river to encourage the Mexican army to fire, therefore declaring the Mexican-American War. After the American victory, Polk got California New Mexico territory for 15 million dollars. He also got the Texas southern border to be at the Rio Grande river.
