That is because dry ice turns from solid into a gaseous state when left at room temperature. This chemical process is called sublimation.

Hey there!

The reason why pieces of dry ice gradually get smaller when left at a room temperature is because its the solid form of carbon dioxide. An also, because  carbon dioxide does not exist as a liquid at normal pressures, the dry ice undergoes sublimation directly from a solid to gas state.
