Define imagery, give an example from your reading or of your own creation, and explain why imagery is used

Imagery refers to the representation of ideas, objects, feelings through the use of figurative language. Its main goal is to appeal to the senses and provoke a striking effect on the reader.  

An example of imagery would be:

Her tears were caressing her face, whilst the room was slowly being devoured by absolute darkness. This example appeals to the sense of touch, as well as it provides visual elements.
