The Moon has no atmosphere and no atmosphere means no weathering. The Earth on the other hand, has an atmosphere so it can have/do weathering. Weathering is very powerful on Earth because it destroys rocks and landforms. And so without weathering, natural features would be able to build up more and not be able to break down and without that, we would not have some of the sand and dirt we use today.
