Let [tex]x[/tex] be our unknown number. The product of that number and 3 is thus [tex]3x[/tex]. Than number minus two means [tex]x-2[/tex]. These two quantities are equal, so we have

[tex]3x=x-2[/tex]

If you want to solve the equation, subtract x from both sides to get

[tex]2x=-2[/tex]

and finally divide both sides by 2 to get

[tex]x=-1[/tex]
