Answer:

To solve for y, you want to use the distributive property

First you want to distribute the 8 through the 3y-5 and the 9 through the y-5

8(3y-5)= 24y-40

9(y-5)= 9y-45

24y-40=9y-45 (get the x on one side, so first add 40 to each side)

24y=9y-5 (now subtract 9y to each side)

15y=-5 (divide both sides by 15)

y= -5/15= -1/3
