A mordant is a chemical binding agent or any chemical substance which binds or attaches the dye to a material.

The mordant in biology is usually used in the gram staining procedure which binds the crystal violet stain, changes its shape and help attach the dye molecules to the cell wall of the bacteria.

The mordant used in the gram staining is the iodine solution added after the addition of crystal violet stain.
