Being open to change & being flexible is important when it comes social thinking because humans are social creatures and adapting to new ways of thinking and creating evolves our old ways of thinking and doing into new, innovative ways.

Short answer: It helps creatures that undergo social thinking to develop new ways of thinking and helps them evolve in their thinking.
