Yellow bunsen flames are called 'safety flames' because, unlike the roaring blue flame achieved when the air-hole is fully open, they can easily be seen and avoided - this decreases the chance of loose hair/clothing catching fire, which means that you are safer overall. 'Blue flames', however, can be difficult to see even close up.
