Stop and smell the roses came from the black plague or the bubonic plague were many soilders and people died from a disease caused by rats. The smell on the boats were of death and flesh burning so they would put roses in their pockets and smell the sent of it to help. This also had to do with the ring around the rosey rhyme ...
