1. Insert "x-1", where it says "y". Now you have:

x-1=2x+1

2. Subtract variable x from both sides. Now you have:

-1= 1x+1

3. Subtract 1 from both sides. Now you have:

-2= 1x

4. Divide 1 from both sides. Now you have:

-2=x (switch it to ) x=-2
