The answer is ; it becomes a Mg+1cation

The electron configuration of magnesium is 2.8.2

When a magnesium atom loses an electron it gains  +1 charge. This is because it has an extra proton without a matching electron.   It has to bind a -1 charged anion (ionic bond) or lose an extra electron (for stable electron configuration 2.8) to become stable.
