The answer is; atom


Silicon atoms, that make up sand, are the smallest chemical units of the element.  Sand (quartz) is mostly comprised of silicon (IV) dioxide as its chemical structure.  Splitting of the atoms requires high accelerated energy particle bombarding the atomic nucleus and splitting it into subatomic particles.
