One way that you can be sure that 1/2 is in fact greater than 3/7 is by converting them to a common denominator.
For example, if you convert 3/7 to 6/14, and 1/2 to 7/14, you'll see that 7/14 is greater than 6/14. So, 1/2 is greater.
