The formula of a midpoint between two points:

[tex]M\left(\dfrac{x_1+x_2}{2},\ \dfrac{y_1+y_2}{2}\right)[/tex]

We have (5, -1) and (-2, -4).

Substitute:

[tex]\dfrac{5+(-2)}{2}=\dfrac{3}{2}=1.5\\\\\dfrac{-1+(-4)}{2}=\dfrac{-5}{2}=-2.5[/tex]

Answer: The midpoint is (1.5, -2.5).
