A sequence is said to be arithmetic if every couple of adjacent elements differ by the same number. If this is the case, that constant number is called the common difference.

This sequence is arithmetic, because the difference between every element and the previous one is

  • [tex] 9.4 - 6 = 3.4 [/tex]
  • [tex] 12.8 - 9.4 = 3.4 [/tex]
  • [tex] 16.2 - 12.8 = 3.4 [/tex]

So, the common differnece is 3.4, because every couple of adjacent terms differ by 3.4
