So (f-g)(x) basically is a fancier way of saying f(x) - g(x).

f(x) - g(x) = (4x²-3) - (x+1)        (distribute the negative sign)

              = 4x² - 3 - x - 1       (add like terms)

              = 4x² - x - 4    (answer)

C.
