I believe the answer is: the destructive event or prank the program is intended to deliver

Payload is usually delivered to the  'targets' by making hidden in the content that they want to consume. For example, it often concealed as a form of email with downloadable attachment. When the targets download the attachment thinking that it's something harmless, next thing they know their devices are already infected with malwares.
