I believe the answer is: The characters should change their behavior through gradual, successive steps

According to bandura, Behaviour could only be formed through prolonged process of learning, observation and conditioning. Because of this, people cannot change their behaviour in a short period of time, and had to follow a gradual successive steps which aim to change one small part of the behaviour at a time.
