X^2 and X are not like terms. They have different degrees.

For example, 2x^2 and x^2 are like terms because they have the same degrees. When you add them you get 3x^2. If you try to add x^2 and x, you cant do it because they have different degrees.

No they are not because x^2 has 2 as the exponent and x has 1 as the exponent. you can add them together
