When subtracting a positive from a negative number, you are just adding them together but changing the second number into a negative as well.

-a-b= -a+-b

-1/2+-3/5; I turn them into decimals.

-0.5+-0.6

-1.1

-1 1/10

So, -1/2-3/5= -1 1/10
