The Iran-Contra Affair was a clandestine U.S. arms deal that traded missiles and other arms to free some Americans held hostage by terrorists in Lebanon. The funds from the arms deal were also used to prop up armed conflict in Nicaragua. This contentious deal making led to a political scandal that threatened to bring down the presidency of Ronald Reagan.
