Why does gatsby object to letting tom drive his car?

In Chapter 7, Gatsby doesn't want Tom to drive his car because he does not care for Tom, he hates him, and is in love with his wife. 
Also, Gatsby's green leathered car was his status symbol. This shows that he doesn't trust Tom and thinks that he would crash the car.
